Ivan Perkov was born in 1989 in Split. He completed his undergraduate studies in Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split in 2010, with a thesis titled "The Politicality of Youth in Split." He went on to earn a Master's degree in Sociology from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb in 2013, defending his thesis on "The Europeanization of Croatian Security Discourse." From 2017 to 2021, he pursued doctoral studies in Sociology at the same faculty, and in 2021, he defended his dissertation on "The Social Aspects of the Waste Management System in Zagreb." For his exceptional achievements in doctoral studies, he was awarded a scholarship by the Faculty.
Between 2014 and 2017, he worked at the Office for Studies and Quality Management at the University of Zagreb. Since 2017, he has been employed at the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Croatian Studies. Initially serving as an assistant (until 2022), he later became an assistant professor specializing in specific branches of sociology. His primary research interests include urban sociology, the sociology of risk, and social ecology. He contributes to various courses at the Department of Sociology, with his most notable work being the development of the "Risk Society" course, which he co-created with the distinguished Dutch professor Joost van Loon.
For over a decade, Perkov has been actively involved in academic journalism, serving as an editor for the Croatian university newspaper Universitas, where he published numerous articles, analyses, and interviews with prominent academic figures. He also played a key role in the founding of studentski.hr, the first Croatian student portal. In addition to his editorial work, he regularly publishes popular science and analytical articles in daily and weekly newspapers and makes appearances on radio and television programs. In 2023, he was honored with an award for young scientists and artists by the Society of University Teachers and Other Scientists in Zagreb.
Perkov is a member of the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Croatian Studies and the Senate of the University of Zagreb. From 2022 to 2024, he served as the Vice Dean for Business at the Faculty of Croatian Studies. He is an active participant in professional associations, including the Croatian Bioethical Society, the Croatian Philosophical Society, and the American Sociological Association. Furthermore, he is involved in the cultural and intellectual life of Croatia as a member of Matica Hrvatska, serving as the secretary of its Department of Sociology.
Perkov has published more than ten articles in scientific journals and conference proceedings and has been a speaker at over 25 international scientific symposia. He is the author of the book "Waste Society" (2022).
He is married and the father of three children.
